GIVEAWAY! Autographed copy of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” ― Jim Ryun

Guess what? Gretchen Rubin was in town last week. I went to her reading of Better Than Before. I loved the book so much that I had her sign my copy. I also thought “Wouldn’t it be great if I could bless a complete stranger with her wisdom?”

So, you guessed it- I am giving away one signed copy (details at the end). After all, who doesn’t love a good read or have habits to break?

Now, on to my review. This is NOT a step-by-step guide, or a “do this and you will change” sort of book. Instead, it’s a more a hybrid of self-help manual and memoir. Yes, there are some references to work done by people who have studied habit change, but you will not find any charts or hard statistical date. Or, in the words of Rubin: “I’ve found that I’m more likely to be persuaded by seeing one person’s successful action than by the most impressive research. It’s a data point of one- but for me that’s a very persuasive data point.” (247). The therapist in me melted at those words. Though, I digress, Rubin starts with a question she had in her own life, a question many of us have had – how do we change our habits? Rubin starts from a framework that every individually forms habits differently, and identifies four personality types:

  1. OBLIGERS: Upholds commitments to others, not so great at upholding commitments to themselves.
  2. UPHOLDERS: As the name implies, upholds commitments to both themselves and others.
  3. QUESTIONERS: Great at upholding commitments to themselves, but will challenge external commitments.
  4. REBELS: No intrinsic need to uphold either commitment, unless it makes sense for them.

Although you may not fit neatly into one category or another (I am mostly a Questioner, but have some Upholder characteristics), you will probably identify most strongly with one of the four. Rubin explains how to monitor yourself and your actions, habits, preferences, and what is important to us. And by preferences, I mean all preferences. She goes into if you are an early or late riser, do things on time or procrastinate, spending patterns, and the list goes on and on. If anything, she’s thorough. She then goes into how habits start, how some are a choice, and how some occur out of an event. It’s a dissection of habits and forces you to be self-reflective. If you are ready to make some changes, but just need a little something more to clarify your thinking, inspire you, or inform you; this may be your book.

I’m using Rafflecopter to do this giveaway, since I’ve never done one before. You can get entries by leaving a comment email me or follow me. Let me know if you like the Rafflecopter method or have a better option in case I do this again 🙂 You should also know this book is the paperback edition and has a crease in the cover. I, sadly, stuffed it back in my bag to protect it from the rain.

Yes, she signed your book!

It was a great educational evening out with girlfriends. I snapped that photo as a reminder for me to relax more, since laying in bed reading and sipping on a chocolate latte is not the norm. I also find that mug hilarious because I had no clue there was a female Darth Vader. Thank you for reading.

  2. I love the quote you share at the start of your post. So often I dismiss habit as following motivation as being a critical part of the process. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
