These questions make for enriching dinner table conversation, but they can be equally illuminating if you simply ask them of yourself. I stumbled onto the idea of asking big questions because I needed them myself. They drive our growth, and we can come back to them year after year.
- What are some of the patterns or ways that you conduct your life that work well for you?
- What are the barriers that get in your way?
- How do you handle conflict? Change?
1. What are some of the patterns or ways that you conduct your life that work well for you?
I am at my best when I exercise in the morning, making it part of my hygiene routine.
2. What are the barriers that get in your way?
If we’re talking about getting in the way of a productive day…When technology breaks down, I lose my momentum. Whether it’s a broken internet connection or computer issues, troubleshooting on my own or waiting for tech support, it throws off my whole day.
How do you handle conflict? Change?
3. It depends on the nature of the conflict and the parties involved. But, generally, I try to shift my focus to something I can control. I can’t control how long a client keeps me hanging, but I can use the wait time on marketing efforts to capture other clients.

1. Exercise in the morning to wake the brain. Eating regularly before I’m hungry. Writing and playing music every day, even for just ten minutes. Sleeping and waking at the same time every day.
2. Apathy. Focusing on things I can’t control. Spending too much time thinking and planning, and too little time taking action.
3. Sometimes not very well. More recently I have been embracing conflict as opportunities for growth. Communicating how I can move past the conflict honestly with others and myself.

I wish I’d listened to my mother sooner about just such a thing!
