I love the Op-Ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader
Re: “Financial literacy may soon be required for Washington students. Meet the teen behind it” [March 3, Northwest]:
Thank you to high school student Ashwin Joshi and state Rep. Skyler Rude, R-Walla Walla, for taking the initiative to have House Bill 1915 introduced and passed in the House and Senate. It would require schools to offer high school students a half credit of financial education beginning in the 2027-28 school year.
All Washington state public school students will benefit, regardless of race, sexuality, religious or political beliefs.
Family members and churches, sports teams and clubs, and after-school activities are a very important part of a young person’s development. However, public schools were designed to offer an academic curriculum. Joshi and Rude have given us the key that I hope throws open a door to more math and science, history and literature classes, as well as apprenticeships and internships that will help all Washington students become independent, self-confident and contributing members of society.
Gov. Jay Inslee should sign this bill into law.
