School Safety: Declare a Lock Emergency

I love the op-ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader.

Re: “Seattle Schools upgrades locks, posts safety signs after shooting” [Feb. 21, Local News]:

Seattle Public Schools building locks will be updated to make sure doors can be locked from the inside, according to a statement by Superintendent Brent Jones. District spokesperson Tim Robinson said there are about 15,000 locks that need to be changed and the district is about halfway done. These 7,500 will be finished in two years. I believe that two years is too long and that Superintendent Jones should declare the classroom lock replacement an emergency, mandating that they be replaced by the end of this school year. With a group of workers tasked with replacing 10 locks per day each, this can be done.

Given our current lack of gun-safety laws, none of our children and grandchildren should be left vulnerable in an unlocked classroom any longer than necessary. The tragic death of one child is far too many already.
