Kroger merger: ‘Consumers Are Taking a Beating’

I love the op-ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

Re: “Kroger seeks to create grocery giant in $20B Albertsons bid” [Oct. 14, Business]:

Kroger is working to buy Albertson’s stores. Only five years ago, Albertson’s purchased Safeway along with store brands in other states in a huge merger.

It concerns me greatly if this is to go through, because we need choice and competition as consumers, and I think this will directly affect both. It’s claimed that this will improve efficiencies and expand customer reach.

It may be more efficient for them, and I’m sure quite profitable at the rate all the chains have been raising prices, but I believe it could hurt employees and consumers who benefit from a competitive and diversified marketplace. I wonder how many stores will be closed once this happens? What happens to prices once this happens? I think many people are having to cut back purchases right now.

I think it’s worth peoples’ time and effort to let elected officials and the White House know how they feel on this issue. It is slated to go through in early 2024. We consumers are taking a beating right now at the hands of an increasingly consolidated marketplace, and it’s time to speak our piece.
