Education

It’s one thing to know a lot; it’s another thing to have the access that allows you to put that knowledge to good use. Having connections with people who have walked the path you’re trying to walk – to learn from their mistakes and wisdom- really changes the game…Ask questions. It’s the only way to learn. I continually dare myself to face my own ignorance and not fear coming off as unintelligent. I encouraged them as they enter college and their adult lives to never stop learning. – Lupita Nyong’o

  1. This is so true! I couldn’t my children everything they needed so it was important to me that I always gave them a mentor that had already gone down the path they were trying to go. Unfortunately, my oldest son is the one that benefited from those relationships the most! Great post!

Mentorships are so important for both parties. I continue to be a mentor for first year graduate students of color. It keeps me grounded, and keeps me young and my skills fresh. Through helping a young individual achieve their personal or career goals, introducing them to new ways of thinking, challenging our own limiting assumptions, sharing valuable life lessons, and much more.
