Etiquette Lessons: Shoes off

Can You Ask Guests to Take Their Shoes Off? Most people quickly figure out the house rules when they see all the shoes lined up upon entering a home, says Whitmore, but a gentle reminder that you prefer they remove their shoes is fine too. Just don’t expect people to pad around your home in bare feet. “I would certainly provide something to put on people’s feet,” says Whitmore. “I might provide socks or those disposable slippers so that people feel comfortable.”

You might let first-time visitors know in advance — say, when you are issuing a dinner invite — so they’re not taken off guard. This is common practice in our rainy community so people don’t track in mud, etc., and we’ve all gotten used to it. xxAlisa

I agree it should be noted in an invitation, or guests should be verbally informed. No one wants to show up to a party to learn they must walk around in stocking feet, or worse barefoot. I have also found that most people have no problem honoring the shoeless request. Thanks for reading and commenting!
