Got Whiskey! What I love about Blue Stem is the box tells you what’s included. This box included: Ginger simple syrup, aromatic bitters, kumquat aromatize, and a recipe card for a cocktail called “The Root”. This box would make eight cocktails. Additional required ingredients: whiskey (sarsaparilla /cherry bark), one orange (for peel), large ice cubes. Once again, I handed this box off to my spouse so he could make cocktail magic. He read the box and vetoed the botanical whiskey, and stated we would have to make do with what we have. He’s a whiskey drinker and chef, so I trusted the guy’s judgment as he grabbed the beautiful decanter of whiskey from the bar cart. In less than five minutes he was misting kumquat aromatic spray and adding slices of orange. The guy knows me well, I have never been one for just the peel, as I do not understand inedible garnish. Like, have you ever seen a bartender wash any citrus? What do they do with the rest of the orange? (According to my spouse bars/restaurants do wash their citrus, and the oranges are muddled into other drinks, or turned into a vinaigrette). He handed me a cocktail. Verdict: Wow, this tastes like summer. My spouse agreed, and reports this reminds him of good Old-Fashioned. He also states muddled kumquats and a half a lemon followed by the recipe would make a great cocktail topped with candied ginger. We will have to make that recipe another time as we have the makings for six more cocktails.
