The Party’s Over

How do I subtly tell guest that the party’s over and it’s time to leave?

Before the party: include an end time on the invitation (for example, “Dinner and dessert from 7p.m. to 10p.m”) This goes for text messages as well as formal invites. Just put it in writing.

Near the End: Cues include lowering music and brightening lights. Because it’s important not to make guest feel rushed, stagger these changes so they won’t seem abrupt.

Final Moments: Begin to thank everyone for coming or make a quick speech about how to get a rideshare for that who need a lift. These signals will leave your guest with a clear and positive send-off.

Someone we know used to simply announce, “It’s been wonderful, dear friends, and now I have go to bed.” Not exactly subtle, but it did the job.
