Have you ever read something that makes you pause and reflect, and sometimes gives you chills? Earlier this year I read about a program called  “Beyond These Bars.” The goal of this program is to provide inmates in solitary confinement in U.S. prisons with an image upon their request. The image could be real or imagined. The volunteer photographer sets off to snap or create the image, so that those that are locked up in seven or eight foot by 10 foot cell can have something positive to focus on. In addition to sending completed photographs to the inmates in prison, the program uses the project to provide public education about solitary confinement and support campaigns to limit its use. Working in partnership with local advocates, Beyond These Bars often put on travel tour exhibitions with the request forms and photographs; hold events and discussions; and encourage media coverage about solitary confinement.  Would you become a volunteer photographer?
