In a small discussion group for a course on racism… What were your first experiences recognizing your own racial/ethnic identity? What did you learn about people of racial, socio-economic class, or gender groups other than your own?

I remember my grandmother’s daily/hourly affirmations of how I was different but still beautiful. The biggest- getting my hair straightened as a child was my first experience as a colored girl. What I learned I learned a good education would promote me to middle class standing.
Is middle class real?
