The Heirloom

“They also do not want our furniture! Lol. But with the recent passing of my mom, I made sure each of my daughters had a piece of my mom — some china she hand painted — and told them that after we are gone, at least keep one thing. Even if it’s just the stories we have told them over the years. Because with both my mom and dad now gone, I cherish that one piece of their lives I kept and, of course, all those stories.” -Susan Beacham

My mother was aghast when I told her that I didn’t want her house full of prized antiques. She’s been to my house hundreds of times [and] it never occurred to her that I have no place to put them, and that I’m clearly not an antique person. I think sometimes people look at their children as continuations of themselves. Like, they’ll carry the exact same torch through life that they did. Sorry, doesn’t work that way.”
