The phrase “It feels like home” can mean many things, but more often than not what we’re referring to when we say it is in a physical place. It can be a familiarity or something that reminds us of where we came from or the influences that surround us or color our earliest memories. It can also be something we’ve never experienced before, something we long to feel and have finally found, a safety or sense of belonging. It can be the people who grew up around, the ones who shaped our understanding of the world early on, or the people we find along the way, the ones who see us for who we really are and alter our trajectories in positive ways. Home can be a space or environment that we create for ourselves and people we care about. Home could be something we wear and live our lives in a favorite coat. It can be art. It can be science. It can be a destination or represent a new vista of possibilities. Home can be a vision— a kind of connectedness or hope. But what home feels like — or what feels like home — is a very particular extraordinary singular sensation that is unique to each of us and where (or how or when) we find that feeling is the only thing we can determine on our own.
