Community

Community care is so important to our overall health. I feel affirmed. I feel at home. I feel like the weight of this world are not on my shoulders when in community.

  1. You know as a child I had a community! I knew everyone in our neighborhood. But today not so. However, I must say that I feel safe in my subdivision because although I know just my next door neighbor and the guy across the street that use to cut my grass, everyone over here knows my children. I can’t do anything or go anyplace in my city without someone asking me if I’m Kisha, William, or Kirvin mom! And that makes me feel safe. However, during the presidential election of 2020, I sure was scared. The neighbors to my right are renters. It’s an old white woman and her brother. The woman is sweet and we talk. But that brother is white as a sheet of paper with blue eyes and he don’t speak to me and I promise you I was afraid as I don’t know what election night. I had to have one of my children come stay with me because I was afraid he shoot up my house. So, yes community is vital. We thrive in community.

I too had a community growing up and can still recall who lived in every house on the block. Today, I know only the neighbors on either side of me, and the curmudgeon across the street. Though may we continue to find our communities, and safe spaces as that is often where we thrive.
