We have an adult granddaughter ace at New Technology who can only tell the time digitally – i.e. hands free.

Oy! That is scary. I believe I definitely think it is good for the brain and even better for the mind. A analog clock can provide a vivid representation of time that digital clocks cannot. Analog clocks are great for teaching time management, concepts including the passage of time, how much time we have left to complete something, etc. I say your grand daughter is missing out on a important skill.
