Ripple Spritz

I laughed for a good minute after reading the name of the latest cocktail “Ripple Spritz.” It reminded me of one of my favorite comedians, the late great Redd Fox, and the classic television show Sanford and Son (for those who are unaware, Red Fox’s drink of choice was Ripple). Oh, how I could hear Fred G. Sanford cracking colorful jokes. Though, I digress, what I love about Blue Stem is that the box tells you what’s included. This box included: Thyme simple syrup, elderberry tincture, rosemary hydrosol (doesn’t it read like a science kit?), and a recipe card.  We would just need to add botanical gin, sparkling wine/champagne, and one lemon for peel (we omitted this). Once again, I handed this box off to my spouse so he could make cocktail magic. Reading the recipe, he rambled on about the different flavor profiles of sparkling wine and champagne. I took this as a culinary challenge and handed him a bottle of sparkling rose wine. In less than five minutes he was misting rosemary hydrosol on top of our drinks. He handed me a cocktail and I couldn’t resist the following toast “I am coming, Elizabeth”. Verdict: Wow, this was delicious, light, and refreshing. I highly recommend these boxes.

Know the Value

If you don’t value your time, neither will others. Stop giving away your time and talents. Value what you know and start charging for it.” —Kim Garst, author and keynote

Things I’d Say if I Were a Therapist That Prove I Shouldn’t Be a Therapist

“Sorry, I don’t take that insurance. Or any insurance. Too complicated.”

“How was your week? Are you still clinging to that toxic relationship so that you don’t have to go through the hassle of a breakup?”

“Have you ever thought about thinking before you act? Sorry if that’s obvious, I just never see you doing it.”

“That guy sounds like an asshole. Show me his social accounts—we can make fun of him together.”

“Maybe your friends wouldn’t keep abandoning you if you didn’t dump all your problems on them. That’s what I’m here for, remember? Unless you started paying them, too. Oh, what’s that? No, you didn’t? You just expect everyone to be at your emotional beck and call with zero boundaries or they’re ‘not a real friend’?”

“I hope you don’t mind me lying down on the couch this time. I’m just really tired. All of my clients have been exhausting today. Feel free to take my chair.”

“Maybe instead of telling me about how you’re contemplating cheating on your girlfriend, consider celibacy so that she and all other women can be rid of you.”

“Whenever you bring up your marriage I always sit there and think, Why hasn’t his wife divorced him yet? I mean, you clearly don’t pull your weight at all. This woman must be fed up. I bet you expect praise every time you do the dishes. You’re the kind of man who makes me view the institution of marriage as a form of servitude. I would tell you to get couple’s therapy, but I’m rooting for the demise of your union.”

“Your friend sounds annoying. I refuse to elaborate.”

“Look, you can enter into yet another codependent dynamic, or you can push me out of the fucking window. Which is it?”

“What is wrong with you? Don’t answer that—it’s rhetorical.”

“If I had your job, I would be so miserable. I honestly don’t know how people like you get through the day.”

[Spinning around in chair.] “Wheeeeeeee!”

“I admire your ability to lie to yourself.”

“Congratulations on the pregnancy and all, but your child is gonna haaaaaaate you. You really shouldn’t be around any children until you stop acting like one. Is there a way to prescribe that?”

“If I have to hear you whine about this married guy you’re sleeping with one more time, that’s it. Get better ethics. And his wife isn’t the problem—he is. Good luck with that.”

“I don’t think that I can see you again. Unfortunately, you seem totally unsalvageable.”

Mindfulness Skills to Disrupt Default Habits

We’ve all evolved with default modes prioritizing survival and efficiency, often at the expense of fulfillment and sustainable impact. Through the following shifts in our mindset, we can develop a reliable and effortless approach to seeing clearly and aligning our actions with our intentions:

  1. Bring awareness when we find ourselves automatically reacting.
  2. Seek to understand with compassion when we’re feeling judgy.
  3. Seek new information with curiosity when stuck in our echo chambers.
  4. Tap into mindful energy to take actions aligned with our goals, even when it’s uncomfortable to change old ways of thinking and acting.
  5. Choose appreciative joy over negativity.
  6. Let go of attachments to achieve inner calm.
  7. Focus on what is important when we feel distracted and overwhelmed.
  8. Respond in a balanced way with equanimity instead of biased impulsivity.

A Legacy of Greatness

I stand on the shoulders of all the women who have come before me – my aunties, my grandparents— And celebrate a legacy of greatness. I have a responsibility to use everything I have learned in my career and my personal life to move my city forward. – Yvonne M. Spicer
