Mindful Housekeeping: Laundry

Folding Laundry :The repetitive nature of folding, coupled with the quiet satisfaction of seeing the tangle of clean clothes transformed into a neat pile, makes folding laundry another good choice for a meditative activity.Use your senses to enhance the experience, inhaling the scent of fresh linens and feeling the texture of the fabrics in your hands.

Charting a New Path

“Charting a different path begins with reprogramming our thinking. We’ve been lied to. Misled into believing our power is derived from money or proximity to whiteness, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Our power is derived from our principles, our values and our people. Our currency, our medium of exchange…is love. And love — real love — requires action. What you love, you protect. What you love, you fight for and with. What you love, you demand more from. What you love, you invest in. What you love, you work tirelessly to see continue.”

This season of release is an invitation to let go of the lies and embrace the truth of our power.

Create an Intentions List

  • What’s something small you can do each week to ladder up to your “one word?”
  • What are your bigger life goals this year?
  • What are you doing when you feel happiest at home?
  • Is there something you did last year that you’d like to do even more of this year?
  • What are some things you hope to keep consistent this year, and a few things you hope to change?
  • A year from now, you hope to feel more ____?

Dining

Why don’t you… Dine at a restaurant that doesn’t require a Resy strategy. Emancipate yourself from being offered 10:15 p.m. on a Tuesday three months from now. Go somewhere terminally unhip. Somewhere that’s old school and proud of it. Somewhere you can simply walk in. The food will be cheaper. Our night will be better. You’ll be home by nine.

Get your tool kit together

Unless you’re a professional handyperson, you don’t need every tool money can buy. Who has the room? Think of this less as an everything-you-could-possibly-need tool kit and more like your curated collection of go-to tools that can cover your most common projects.

Gather your tool kit.

Here’s what you should have if you just want to cover the basics.

  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Flathead (or slotted) screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Spackling
  • Utility knife
  • Pliers
  • WD-40
  • Tape measure

This is a small-enough collection that anyone, no matter how tiny their home, can make room for it. I promise! You can also cut down on the amount of space you need by buying multi-functional tools, like screwdrivers with multiple heads. I have and love this one, and have also been successful with IKEA’s interchangeable screwdriver, which is part of a handy (very portable!) set.

If you want to level up your tool kit, here are some other things I recommend adding.

  • Cordless drill/driver with assorted bits
  • Wrench
  • Painter’s multitool
  • 1-inch paintbrush to use for touch-ups

Create your home repair command station.

Once you have your tools, keep them together in whatever container makes the most sense for you. For years, my tool kit lived in a collapsible caddy like this one. Maybe you’d rather use a plastic storage box you can pop a lid on and stack neatly in a closet, or maybe a sturdy shower caddy-type product is more your style. It’s up to you!
