Student’s description of areas of competency and areas for growth: This quarter my practicum instructor, and I spent time exploring discussing boundaries with patients and other social service providers. The area of boundaries- this is an area that I can continue to grow in, as I have covered a youth’s grocery tab when he was a few cents short, or inquired about ordering Avon from a youth to keep her employed. I also believe I will continue to learn more about boundaries as _____ and I start to review the book of ethics. Practicum instructor narrative evaluation: I am looking forward to further discussions of ethical practice with ______ as well as looking more at cultural competency issues focusing on socio economic status, gender, sexual orientation, ability and cultural background
When you’re a social worker, boundaries can be a tough lesson to learn. Looking back, I know even then I was appreciative of the open conversations and constructive criticism from my “colleagues.” It truly has turned me into a better clinician. I learned that it is always better to empower a client instead of possibly enabling them. Today I tell my students, “You can only do better when you know better.” I do applaud them for having their heart in the right place, that is a trait of a wonderful person, and the making of a good social worker.
