Growing Spaces

I love to design spaces for children, but I avoid themes or anything too childish because I want them to grow up in beautiful rooms that inspire and will allow their own creativity to shine as they get older.

Feelings by Name

Get to know your feelings by name. If we didn’t grow up in a family where our full range of emotions was accepted – maybe we were criticized when we were sad or angry- we didn’t learn to be with our own feelings and now we don’t trust that other people can make space for them. As adults, we may have become so used to disconnecting that we don’t even know how we feel anymore. This sounds so elementary, but sometimes with clients I use an emotional wheel, it’s a circular chart that shows the range of human emotions and how they relate to one another. Say you’re feeling sad; on the wheel sadness has the subcategories loneliness, hurt, and disappointment, which are three very different feelings. This helps you narrow it down and use a word that captures your internal world. You can pick a word from the emotional wheel and the best discovers what’s going on with you at the moment. It’s a gentle way to learn to identify and describe your emotions, and you can begin to establish that it’s safe to feel and connect to them. You may be tempted to judge yourself for those emotions, the same way you were judged growing up. Instead, try replacing that judgment with curiosity. What prompted this feeling, and why? See if you can focus on gaining insight instead of being self – critical.  – Viena Pharaon

Lavender Infused Cocktail

Like the first one, this box came like a chemistry set, and with a recipe card for a cocktail called “Lavendar Mist”. What I love about BlueStem is the box tells you what’s included. This box included: lavender simple syrup, lavender hydrosol, elderberry tincture, and recipe card. Additional required ingredients:  vodka, champagne or rose, lemon juice, one lemon, and ice. Once again, I handed this box off to my spouse so he could make cocktail magic. My spouse got to work, and in less than five minutes he was following the last step “Mist of Lavender Hydrosol for aromatic garnish” and handed me a cocktail.Verdict: Wow, this tastes like lavender, though maybe it would be better without the mist. Nope, still very lavender!

Laugh

If you’re not inclined to stop and breathe or meditate in the moment, then laugh! Laughter prompts a diaphragmatic breath, which releases dopamine and serotonin, and reduces stress, anxiety and muscle tension. Create your own “laugh track” such as jokes or YouTube videos.

Chicago Style Pizza

What do you get the person who has everything? Apparently, the answer is subscription boxes.  I received several types of subscription boxes, and they just keep coming. So, I felt I would share my “reviews –

Opening my door, my regular UPS delivery guy smiled, and said, “What time should I circle back tonight for dinner?” I laughed as we have this conversation often, which tends to happen when your spouse is a chef.  I asked him what was on the menu today. He held out a large box that read Giordano’s, I stood in shock.  I didn’t even know they shipped. For those who are not in the know Giordano’s is a world-famous pizza place in Chicago (they now have other locations) it’s the best of the best. Yeah, if you ask me about Lou Malnati’s I would also say, it’s the best because it really depends on the day, the mood, and how long the line is. I told my UPS guy he could stop back around 6 and bring the wine. He of course didn’t show, and it’s just small talk between friendly strangers. I did, however, shock my spouse with this gift.  The box contained three pies, one sausage, one pepperoni (this pie contain only one pepperoni which, decotalvey sat on top. What the hell) and one cheese. The short review, just like at the restaurant, takes 45 minutes to cook, smelled just as amazing. Taking my first bite I closed my eyes, and I swore I was sitting on the sidewalk on Rush Street. Would I recommend this pizza? Yes, okay maybe not the Pepperoni, and if you’re planning to visit Chicago add this to your itinerary.
