“I’ve been living in service of certain ideas—the status quo—trying to explain myself constantly and create a palatable narrative of what I am. And I don’t want to do that.” – Greta Lee

What To Say to Someone Who is Grieving?

Kind words I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I had the right words; just know I care. I don’t know how you feel, but I am here to help in any way that I can. And some of the worst things to say: He/she is in a better place. There is a reason for everything. (I hate that one!!) It’s been a few years; you should move on with your life. (That is the most hurtful of all, because there is not a set time of grief.

Self-Identified Shopaholic

How can you change your relationship with shopping if you’re constantly overspending? It takes a lot of inner work, mindfulness, and reflection on how you feel while you’re shopping to identify the reason you’re shopping to begin with. It often goes a lot deeper than, “Oh, I like that.” Or, “I saw that on some influencer, and I like it.” It could be boredom shopping or stress shopping. Take a step back, slow down, and figure out why you want to spend that money. What’s your best advice for avoiding impulse buys? Create a wish list. This is a really practical and helpful way of creating some distance from the initial wanting of the item and the buying of it. I keep a running list of potential buys in the Notes app on my phone. I give myself a minimum of 24 hours to sleep on it and allow myself to forget about it. Nine times out of 10, I forget about it.

Grief

As a caregiver to a loved one with a terminal illness, I wish to add two recommendations on how people should NOT respond to this news:

First, do not minimize the illness!

Second, do not intrude on others’ privacy (“I heard he’s sick, with what? What’s the prognosis, and how’s he handling it?”).

– Thanks, From the Trenches

Dear From the Trenches: Caregiving at this level is a relentless process of learning while doing. Thank you for passing your wisdom along.

Etiquette Lessons: Social Media

Can You Post Images on Social Media of a Holiday Party You’re Attending? Posting photos of the cocktail soiree you are attending can make things awkward for your host, says Parker. “The host might not want people to know about the party, where the party is, or who is invited,” she says.
