Rant

RANT to dog owners who haven’t taught their dogs to read the signs that say NO DOGS ON BEACHES!

RANT to medical offices who have responded to the problem of no-shows and late arrivals by making appointment times unnecessarily complicated and confusing for everyone. Please do not say, for example, “Your appointment is at 9:30 a.m. and your check-in time is 9:15 a.m.” Just say, “Your appointment is at 9:30 a.m. Please arrive 15 minutes early.”

RANT to the jogger who acted annoyed and let out an expletive when other people dared to be in his path, which, by the way, was a bus stop. People were rightfully waiting for the bus after getting out of work for the day. You can take five seconds, sir, to stop running and calmly walk through the bustle of people. I promise, it’s not going to kill you.

RANT to the guys who splash on half a bottle of cologne before going to the gym! Really? To a lot of people, that is nausea- and headache-inducing. Please save it for date night!

RANT to the lack of pedestrian safety precautions. The city is in the process of making more accommodations for cyclists and electric-scooter riders, but needs to do a better job regarding pedestrian safety. As a pedestrian who has been nearly hit multiple times by reckless cyclists, scooter riders and turning vehicles, please make ALL traffic light cycles have all-way stops for pedestrian crossing ONLY (like they are at Pike Place Market) and prioritize our safety from vehicles, cyclists and some of those nuisance electric-scooter riders who don’t obey traffic laws. Speaking of laws, have better signage and ticket those who are zipping around dangerously on streets and sidewalks. Oh, and stop doing patchwork projects — repave every road. They’re a mess.

RANT to having to show ID to buy nonalcoholic beer. Nonalcoholic. It’s water made to taste like beer. What’s next? Will I get carded for buying a rum cake? How about a margarita-infused doughnut or bourbon pulled pork?

RANT to businesses that are able to charge my account immediately for a transaction but need a week or more to credit my account for refunds and cancellations.

RANT to street parking in Seattle with its two-hour maximum time limit. That’s not enough time to do most of the activities I come into the city for. You should be able to add time to your parking like you can in Portland. I’m confused — does the city of Seattle want people to visit and spend time and money or not?

RANT to a tomato thief and a poor Seattle attitude. To the jerk in our neighborhood who helped himself to our only ripe heirloom on the vine and then ran when caught: that one tomato represented six months of effort. I was shocked to see that Seattle Redditors didn’t agree; apparently, this city thinks that this is OK? Or my fault for not having some sort of impenetrable fencing on my apartment patio? No matter what side of the aisle you fall, I thought we all agreed that you don’t steal from your neighbors? I have been sick for a year, and we live on one income. We are all struggling. Your struggle doesn’t give you a pass to steal from your own community.

RANT to people who complain about their neighbors’ unkempt yards and houses. Perhaps illness, job loss, infirmity, or some other problem is preventing them from prioritizing the appearance of their homes. If it bothers you that much, see if you can help!

Enjoy the process

Outcomes can be elusive. The present moment is where you actually live. Find the joy in the being, not just the doing. Let life be extraordinary in the quotidian rituals and routines. Allow the time and space for sacred synchronicities to arise. This is where the magic lives.
