Getting Top Talent to Stick Around

Offer Enrichment Benefits- During Covid-19 we launched our Flex Benefits program which offers each team member $6,000 annually to spend on whatever they cross across wellness growth, lifestyle, and impact. The program, alongside other initiatives – including extra mental health days and daily virtual stretching and mediation sessions- helps our team have a healthy work-life balance, and helps us grow from a team of 13 to 200-plus. – Alex Zaccaria

The Right Kind of Challenge– Treat employees like adults. We have unlimited vacation and employees can work from anywhere, however they want, as long as their work is getting done. Also, we provide employees with interesting challenges. I encourage employees to take on clients outside of their normal wheelhouse. We also provide a quarterly stipend for enrichment so everyone can continuously learn. – Lauren Kleinman

Purpose

The great thing about purpose is it is agile and can change over the years.
You will never regret working from a position of purpose rather than striving
to get ahead. Things that last are built the old-fashioned way; one day at a
time. You wake up, push forward, and enjoy the progress. To be valuable in my
existence is my purpose. -Taylor Welch

A purpose driven life is a journey of self-discovery and growth, bringing
profound meaning and fulfillment to our existence it’s about aligning our
actions and values with a central purpose or mission that gives us a real sense
of satisfaction and pursuing meaningful, purpose- driven work that aligns with
our values and has a positive impact on the world. – Cris Cawley

New Problem

Is our new problem better than our old problem? With that question, we’re making room for the reality of imperfection – because there will be problems . Once we accept that, we’re able to track progress more realistically, and identify ways to improve going forward.

Leadership

Celebrate everyone Frank Blake, the former CEO of The Home Depot, is a big believer that “you get what you celebrate.” There are many ways to practice this philosophy, but one is how Frank applied it to caring for his team. Every Sunday, Frank sat down and composed handwritten notes to his employees, including those who worked at different stores. He estimates he sent approximately 25,000 notes.

Frank knew how to make people feel appreciated, and that pays off in employees’ happiness and productivity. I don’t write handwritten notes to my team, but I do quarterly check-ins, surprise bonuses and public shoutouts (in front of the team and more importantly clients)

Above all, when things don’t go as planned for an employee, I make sure to remind them of other wins and great work they’ve accomplished. Even your best employees will have hard days or weeks and when that happens, clearing their work reminds them that they don’t have to be perfect. This tends to create an environment where there’s more happiness, creativity, and quality work.

Chef Tales

I was cooking once and had some powdered turmeric on the counter. My young son asked me why I was putting ‘cheese’ in the dish. That was the moment I realized I’d served him Kraft mac ‘n’ cheese one too many times…
