Mini Makeover: Lighting Edition

We’re doing a kitchen remodel that includes changing out light fixtures and I have a few questions. What is pendant lighting? Is it different from chandelier lighting? If so, how do the costs compare and are there advantages to pendant lighting fixtures?

The basic explanation of a pendant light seems to be that it hangs from the ceiling and uses a wire, tube or chain to support only one decorative light bulb.

This may differ from a chandelier that can support multiple lights on a single fixture. But definitions are debatable, since lighting is a huge category with many variations.

As far as expenses to use pendants versus a chandelier, chandeliers may cost more per fixture. However, you may need a few pendant fixtures in place of a single chandelier.

For a custom lighting arrangement, strategically placed pendant lights can have advantages. Hang them parallel in a row, or group several pendant lights hanging at varied heights for a fun, chandelier-like effect.

Two Way Conversation

When you ask a candidate where they hope to see themselves in five years, you gather a lot more information about this candidate’s needs, challenges, and ambitions. It also gives you an opportunity to offer concrete examples of ways your company can meet the candidate’s needs and support their aspirations. You may even learn that a candidate is a better fit for a different role than the one they’re interviewing for.

Take the example of candidate “Alyssa.” Alyssa says she is looking to join an organization to gain more leadership skills and practice more independent decision-making. This gives your company’s hiring representative an opportunity to show her how your training and mentorship programs give her a structured path to move up the company ranks. You can share written and video testimonials of employees who joined with similar interests and were able to lead projects more independently.

Take a different candidate, “Ben.” Ben says he values a company that prioritizes work-life balance. This gives your company a chance to share your generous PTO policy and flexible work schedule, and to cite examples of how the company encourages its members not to respond to work emails and phone calls after hours and on weekends. Maybe you mention a few leaders at the company who take this very seriously, to show that the culture of prioritizing work-life balance comes from the top down.

Beautiful Determination

“In 1983, I went on a commercial rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. Between Crystal [Rapid] and Lava [Falls Rapid] (two huge rapids), there was a fast moving but flat stretch of the river. I asked the guide if I could row. He said, ‘Sure.’ I slipped into his seat and took up the oars. My job was to stay in the current and out of the eddies. I still managed to slip into a big one. It took two tries to get back in the current by working smarter not harder. The guide never commented. I loved it. On the bus ride out, I found myself sitting next to the owner. I asked, ‘What would it take to be a guide for you?’ He replied, ‘Go back to your own area, learn how to guide, then give me a call in two years.’ I was a 37-year-old woman with two teenagers, but that spring, I was the first to sign up with ZigZag, a local company. Two years later, I walked into his office, spread my arms out and said, ‘Here I am.’ He laughed and asked, ‘Who are you?’ That’s how I became a Grand Canyon river guide at the age of 40.”

Successful Beauty

We are living in a society that makes you believe that “more is more” and striving for perfection equals success. Taking the time out of our busy days to focus on beauty shouldn’t have to be intimidating but something that is accessible to everyone. – Claire Rose
