Re: “Abortion is a health care issue, not a legal one — allow pills by mail” [May 25, Opinion]:

While certain states disingenuously argue about heartbeats at six weeks gestation, everyone should know that pregnancies are not viable outside the womb until 24 weeks gestation.

State laws designed to block access to early abortion or ban it completely under the false pretense of health, safety or preserving lives are patently dishonest. When people (read poor, Black or brown women) are denied access to comprehensive care, including abortion care, they suffer from worse health outcomes, more deaths and live in a cycle of poverty. The hypocrisy here is as plain as state laws that seek to restrict “legal voting” in the name of “fraud prevention.”

The Food and Drug Administration has 20-plus years of data on mifepristone for more than abortions. Op-Ed author Dr. Emily Godfrey’s research proves that models of care don’t require office visits to be equally safe and effective.

If the FDA lifts its restrictions on this medicine now, they take the personal decision about having a baby or ending a pregnancy out of the courts and place it back in the privacy of the doctor’s or clinician’s office, where health care takes place.

Do you remember…Full Attics

Did you grow up in a house with an attic filled with your parents’ treasures and memories? Most architects and builders kicked those features to the curb decades ago, as prefabricated wood trusses became the belle of the ball. Guess what? You can have a full attic with real steps leading to it if you choose, all made possible by the same company that makes the roof trusses. This can eliminate the need for that monthly fee many of us pay for off-site storage.

Inquire Within: Finding Your Way

These questions make for enriching dinner table conversation, but they can be equally illuminating if you simply ask them of yourself. I stumbled onto the idea of asking big questions because I needed them myself. They drive our growth, and we can come back to them year after year.

  1. Pick a significant change in your life. What transition took place as a result?
  2. Do you have a pattern in how you deal with endings? Do you just keep moving or make space to mourn or acknowledge what was lost? Do you accept that something or someone has passed?
  3. What endings are incomplete?
  4. How can you create a way to bring closure to unfinished business?
  5. How do you handle sensations of discomfort in transitions?
  6. What happens when you lessen your resistance and increase acceptance to not knowing?
  7. Try new things, go to new places, meet new people, learn new skills as if you’re trying on new clothes, asking, “Does this feel right?”
  8. Create a system of support. Sense what enjoyment or being refreshed feels like in the body. What do you know now that you didn’t before?

Do you remember…Laundry Chutes

Did you use to send plastic army men on secret missions down those chutes? Why would architects snub their noses at these marvelous features of multilevel homes? Yes, laundry rooms have, for the most part, moved up to the main floor of modern homes. But clever planning could still make laundry chutes a helpful reality in new homes, too.

Laundry Chutes. Useful or not?
