Oprah: Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, you choose a single word to bring you guidance for the next 12 months. For example, you’ve chosen gentle to help you fight perfectionism. You’ve also picked spacious as a reminder to make room for things in your life. In 2018, it was grace, to signify that you’re part of something bigger than yourself. Do you have a 2019 word?
Melinda Gates: I do. I have to say it feels very vulnerable to share this. It’s shine.
Oprah: Ah.
Melinda Gates: It’s not about me, it’s about believing that every person has a light inside them. Every single person. If we can turn those lights on—on behalf of women, on behalf of those who don’t have as much as we do, on behalf of minorities in our own country—and stand up for what’s right, we will break through. We’ll all shine. The world will shine.
This is what I’ve chosen to try this year. My 2020 word is Meaningful. My boyfriend’s word is Happiness.

I like this idea. I am going to do some thinking on it and come up with a word that makes sense for me this year.

I have found this to be a wonderful practice, and I am confident you will find your word for 2022. I have a few words on my board, and I a confident that the correct one will jump out at me by the end of January!
