Therapeutic Word of the Day

In therapy, I learned a term that stuck with me: flooded. When someone is yelling and attacking you or misinterpreting you, you are allowed to say “Stop, I’m flooded. I can’t hear you anymore. Your words aren’t landing.” It means “l need a break.” It means “I’ll come back to this conversation when things are calmer, when I’ve gathered myself and when you’ve gathered yourself.”
