Interested in Architecture

What piece of advice would you give to  Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) who are interested in architecture but don’t know how or where to start?

When considering what advice to pass along, I often think of what I would tell my younger self when I was homeless in college, fighting to survive and to get my architectural education, when my professors and advisors continuously told me this field and industry may not be right for me. In addition to seeking out resources like First500 that exist specifically for you, I would tell my younger self, and to young people of color everywhere: If this industry feels lonely, you are not alone. If your ideas are not heard, keep speaking. If one door closes, three will open. Keep going and never give up. If there is no well to drink from, dig until you create one! -Tiara Hughes

Small Things Matter

My love my job and DreamWorks animation, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a handwritten note from the CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. There was a mid-level Carly of nearly 3000, getting a header and thank you on my way out the door. He taught me a lesson that I carry throughout everything I do since then the small things matter a lot.

Uncomfortable Conversations

In the early days of HIMS, I negotiated with vendors until there was no more room for saving. I was proud of this. But years later, an early HIMS employee emailed me about the super uncomfortable conversations I used to have with vendors. He suggested it was silly to have saved a few thousand dollars here and there when we ended up building an incredible successful company. In that moment, I realized how much more important it is to create value at a startup than nickel and dime vendors. Joe Spector

Hitting Reset

The past year or two was radically divided people on so many levels – to help bridge those divides, I want to do better job of listening and trying to understand different perspectives. I don’t ultimately have to agree, but I can be more open minded. Cheyrl Brown

Interior Designer

We all need someone else’s perspective sometimes. Many designers have hourly rates and will come out for a short consultation to offer advice or a vision for your space. Or you can hire a stager to help you rearrange your home for better flow. “Even a good friend who has taste”
