Brilliantly Trained

“I tell my students, ‘When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.” – Toni Morrison

Ambiguous Loss

  1. Give the grief a name. Instead of minimizing your disappointment, name it. “I’m grieving the timeline I thought I’d be on.” “I’m mourning the dream that hasn’t come to life yet.” Giving voice to the loss brings clarity, and clarity fosters healing.
  2. .Stop measuring progress by outdated expectations. Timelines rooted in external expectations (age, culture, family pressure) can fuel unnecessary shame. Healing means releasing the narrative that you’re “behind” and replacing it with one that allows room for your actual journey. –Minaa

Innovate, not imitate

Innovate, not imitate. Innovation isn’t always about creating something new. Sometimes it’s about challenging yourself to see things anew, to enhance your way of being in the world. Find fresh ways to express yourself. Be a perpetual student of awe.

Give generously

Give Generously

Give generously. Your time, your attention, your encouragement. Generosity isn’t just about gestures of giving money. It’s about the simple acts of intention, whether offered outwardly, spoken of kindly, or thought of prayerfully.

nurture the things that do

I’m finding that the key to not responding to/engaging with things that don’t deserve your energy, is to more intentionally nurture the things that do. Like opening the blinds in the morning. Writing a poem. Going for a walk. A cool glass of lemon water. Spending a moment with a loved one. Smiling. Self hugs. Dancing around your living room. The external noise will always be there, but that doesn’t mean you have to be in the noise.Mariah Maddox
