Do we want ‘a world of human decency’?

I love the Op-Ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

My fifth-grade son asked me for help with his homework the other night. His class is reading Lois Lowry’s famous novel, “Number the Stars,” based in Denmark circa WWII. I read this book when I was my son’s age. I couldn’t believe such horrible things had actually happened. Reading his assignment, I was struck by the words at the end of Lowry’s book: “Surely that gift — the gift of a world of human decency — is the one that all countries hunger for still. I hope that this story of Denmark, and its people, will remind us all that such a world is possible.”

Is this what countries hunger for still, “a world of human decency”? Is this what our country hungers for still? I look at what’s happened the past month in our country: thousands of federal workers fired and the freeze of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Lifesaving food and medicine programs, a shining beacon of American hope and generosity, gone.

The ghosts of the past are crying out to us now, in 2025, to speak up for a “world of human decency.” That world is still possible, but only if we stand up for it.

Slow

Slowness doesn’t have to mean retreating from the world, it can be a way of finding calm within the chaos, an energy that connects us back to the vibrancy of our inner self.

This week, wherever you are, I invite you to find your own still point in this restless world. A moment of quiet that’s yours alone to savor and be still.

Positively Purging-I welcome your feedbacks in the comments and your likes and passing the real-life wisdom on to others as I embark on this new venture of “positively purging”, as I know each of these pieces represents something…

Hope

Hope has holes
in its pockets. It leaves little crumb trails so that we, when anxious,
can follow it. Hope’s secret: it doesn’t know the destination- it knows only that all roads begin with one foot in front of
the other.

Put Bags and Coats Away, Not Down

This is my own personal rule for my home, which I only really established this year—but it’s already made a huge difference in cutting down on entryway clutter. As soon as I get home, I make sure to not just drop my things and carry on, but to instead put everything I’m carrying away. I hang up my jacket or coat, put my bag away in the closet, and stow my shoes on a rack. In the past, I would often just kick my shoes off and pile my bags and outerwear on the entryway chair. This would create a domino effect, enabling me to leave other items in my entryway to be dealt with later. Now that I’ve made it a habit to put my things away as soon as I get home, my entryway has remained clutter-free and peaceful.

Purpose

Purpose is what sustains us and when we have it, we literally live longer. Purpose is what carries us forward when titles change, when dreams shift, when the world tries to shake us. And that’s what I want you to sit with: What is your purpose? Not your job title. Not your resume. Not your accolades. But the reason you are here. There are many paths to fulfilling your purpose. Sometimes, it aligns with our outward accomplishments. Sometimes, it doesn’t. And that’s okay. What matters is that you are moving in purpose, not just chasing achievements. That you are still enough to hear the answers that already live inside you.
