Best Advice

My college pastor once told me, “Don’t send flowers when someone dies, send flowers when they are alive.” That advice has always stuck with me. It reminds me to show my gratitude in the here and now. — Bethany Anderson

You need to be a good friend to have a good friend. — Julie Rose

Leave the party while it’s still fun. Too many of us feel the need to stay too long in relationships that we know deep down were never meant to go the distance, in jobs we love but are meant to be stepping stones to greater challenges and growth that lies ahead, in the splendor of childhood innocence that’s better kept as a sweet memory. — Jan Ketcham

Advice from a Horoscope

Surprisingly, romance has been the last thing on your mind lately. You have gravitated toward activities that made you happy as a child. Binge-watching old cartoons and movies with your closest friends has brought some of the most enjoyable times you’ve had in a while.

Money Talk

Approach your partner with empathy and ask: “What is your hope for spending this money?” Or “What is your fear around cutting this item?” when communicating around differences, any requests should be specific. So rather than saying, “We need to save more,” instead say, “Let’s find ways to save $200 extra dollars each month.” And try to use “I statements” when possible, such as: “I am uncomfortable with how much we pay for entertainment subscriptions and wonder if we can cut there.”

What are you saving for? What do you need to cover with a limited budget? Write that down. Then think about potential cuts — but try to maintain the things that bring you joy.

Ask yourself: “What can I cut that won’t negatively affect my mental health?” Dr. McCoy said. “I think people tend to restrict too harshly.”

Hip Hop

I can dissect almost anything that has to do with fashion and dance today and see hip-hop in it. Our eyes are trained. We’ve known hip-hop from its foundation. I’m so proud to be a part of something that wasn’t so easily digestible in the beginning but now is everywhere. – Mc Lyte
