The Cocktail

The cocktail is a creation — not just opened and poured, not just cracked and chugged, but composed, right there on the spot. Its very nature requires intentionality, and that’s a good thing: Mindless drinking, like mindless snacking, can be a slippery slope. I don’t mix a drink unless I’m going to make it thoughtfully, in an appropriate glass, with a complementary garnish. The time and effort it takes, makes me treat the process with respect, as its own little special occasion.

Did the Pandemic Deepen Relationships in Your Life?

The pandemic forced many of us into spending unexpected, extended periods of time with unfamiliar neighbors, family members or strangers. Many of these connections progressed into deep friendships and other kinds of bonds, and have continued to grow and evolve as society has reopened.

Did your relationship with a family member get better because of the time you spent at home? Did estranged or distanced family members reconnect? Maybe you finally met your next-door neighbor, perhaps cooking or running errands for each other. Did isolation help you build up the courage to talk to a stranger or put you in a position to meet someone new, like a spouse or partner?

Once your community started to open up, did you incorporate these new relationships into your life, or did they replace your earlier social circles? Or, did they end? What did you learn in that process?

My Grandmother’s Secret Files

My family was going through my late grandmother’s belongings when we discovered her secret filing cabinet. Unknown to us, she had been printing out our texts and emails to her, saving our childhood art, making newspaper clippings of our marriage announcements. She even kept a notebook listing our jobs, friends and favorite movies, to remember in conversation. In my file there was a email I wrote in high school, saying how scared I was to graduate and become an “adult.” She told me I didn’t have to worry; she was 77 and still felt like a little kid most days. — Eliza Thompson

A Friend’s Steady Love

In middle school, Megan would draw cartoons of the boys I had crushes on and pass them to me in the hallway. In college, she answered my middle-of-the-night phone calls from 400 miles away. Now, she makes me laugh while we FaceTime on opposite coasts. I think about the men I’ve begged to stay and their excuses of needing time and space. I convince myself that maybe I’m not destined to have love that endures. But Megan has had over a decade to leave and enough distance to disappear. I have never thought of her as anything but permanent. — Victoria Yang
