Education: The Humanities Have Value

I love the Op-Ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

Re: “Student Voices: The future may be STEM, but don’t leave liberal arts education behind” [June 26, Education Lab]:

This is a brilliantly penned response from a student recognizing the need for exploration in the humanities to balance the STEM emphasis that has grown exponentially. Recognizing that young people are dealing with high levels of stress and mental health issues might also be an argument to further emphasize liberal arts in addition to STEM related classes.

As a language arts teacher, I know that studying literature requires examining perspectives and navigating concepts that are essential to the cultural fabric of the world. To wrestle with moral issues in a novel means that a student begins to cultivate their own moral compass, meaning that art can push people to change, grow and evolve. If not exposed to great philosophy, the progression of history or the artistic expression that has helped define movements in the evolution of humanity, then we would largely be unaware of what has come before us — we would live in a vacuum in many ways.

Technology is certainly the future, but don’t forget that people need to explore humanity, culture and methods of critical thinking if we wish to truly have a well-rounded future.

A Bear Made With Love

Elizabeth, a handmade teddy bear lovingly sewn by my great-grandmother. I was only 2 when I got it as a Christmas gift, so I don’t remember receiving it, but there are pictures of me holding her after I opened the present. I hugged and played with Elizabeth so much that, when I was around 10, my great grandmother had to make “new skin” for her, which went over her worn-out skin. I still have Elizabeth, and her old ears can still be felt inside the newer ones. — Marissa Fish, La Pointe, Wis.

Imperfect Relative

I envy those people. To be able to tell my brother again that I love him just once more, even when we disagreed, even when we disappointed each other, even when we had each other’s disapproval.

I’m not sure who it is, but I know there is someone in your life — a family member, a wayward friend, a co-worker — who needs the reminder today that they are worthy of someone’s concern, time and ear, just even for a while. Even if, especially if, it’s hard to do so.

I’ll finish my conversation with my brother later today by telling him how grateful I am that he was alive. How grateful I am that I got to love him.

Don’t wait. Speak those words today to the living. – Marcus Harrison Green

Sunset

The sunset brought so much joy to my heart is that iI saw a pink / purple sky sunset during my evening walk. i was so grateful for the ability to have mobility and take a stroll. Grateful for first catching the sunset with a peach and pink hue and then grateful I saw it turn to the most richest of purples skies on the way back.

There’s No Shame In Being Scammed

“One thing that really bothers me is that the people who got conned seem to feel humiliated and ashamed — similar to how many people feel ashamed when they have been sexually assaulted. This is not something to feel ashamed about. The scammers are skilled manipulators of emotions and natural human desires and fears. They know exactly how to ‘pull the wool over someone’s eyes.’ The victims are no different from victims of other kinds of theft or assault or abuse. The scammers violate a trust that is essential to a healthy society.”
