Career Advice

Q: What advice do you have for pivoting to a new career or industry?

Spend at least 60% of your time networking and only 40% of your time actually applying to jobs. Because your network is ultimately what’s going to help you bridge that gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Networking can be as simple as going through your alumni network and seeing if there are any people who have a job title you’re interested in. Then, when it comes to applying to jobs, I like to remind job seekers that more is more. Especially for career pivoters, you want to have as many interview cycles as possible. Applying to as many jobs as possible will give you more practice and boost your confidence. You don’t want to wait until you have an interview with your dream company and then realize that you’ve never had to give an elevator pitch before.

Marriage

Marriage is fucking hard… you have to understand nobody is perfect. And you have to decide: Can I live with this? Can we work with each other on this, or is this a deal breaker? Force yourself to notice if there are any red flags. What kind of relationship do they have with their mother? Is alcohol a problem? Is gambling a problem? Oh my God, my life would be very different if I’d noticed red flags. The expression “I fell in love—  what’s wrong with that sentence? Fell! You don’t want to fall. You want to walk toward him or her on two feet as a whole human being and be very aware of what you’re getting into. —  Jane Fonda

7,000 Miles Away

To make a certain Chinese cake, you have to knead piping hot dough. Too painful for some, but no match for my grandmother, who raised seven children. Because of the pandemic, my father hasn’t been able to visit China to see his beloved mother or eat his favorite cake. After months of searching, my father and I found the cake’s main ingredient in the United States. The evening we finally baked the cake, my grandmother passed away. Maybe she knew that even though he was 7,000 miles away, my father had a taste of home and would be OK. — Lisa Wang
