Kindness: Take Your Time

Take your time. I’m not in a rush.” This one is great for the grocery store, the takeout burrito restaurant, or anywhere else that involves really tired people trying their best, even as they fumble and flail. For example, the woman in front of you pays the cashier but then has to rifle through her overstuffed wallet to put away the change, then store the receipt, then mash the whole fat leather money accordion into her purse. She will usually complete this action with frantic fingers because she knows she’s delaying the whole line, she knows everybody just wants to go home, and she knows she should not save old, mostly used-up gift cards with 63 cents on them. Telling her, “Take your time. I’m not in a rush” always sets off the same reaction: first, surprise (really? because everybody’s in a rush…), and then a flash of sweet, wide-open relief. You have just given somebody a three-minute holiday, not from the stress of life, but from the stress we put on ourselves.

Write It Down

Do you really think you’ll remember that funny thing your toddler said this morning by dinnertime, much less a couple of decades from now? And why are we trusting our brains, which have been through enough lately, to remember exactly what we need at the grocery store to make that Alison Roman recipe?

Whenever that little flag in your head—the “I gotta remember that” one—starts waving, immediately write it down. That could mean quotes, present ideas for the hard-to-buy-for ones in your life, restaurants you want to visit on your next date night, or anything else you’re likely to forget. Make lists, lists, and more lists, either with good old-fashioned pen and paper or in the Notes app on your phone.

Get Rejected More

I was rejected no fewer than four times today. It didn’t feel good, per se, but I recovered faster than the last four rejections. What’s to lose? Remember, the worst they can say, whoever they is, is no.

If there’s one lesson I’m repeatedly learning, it’s that we have to ask for what we want in life. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t. But you have to ask.

If there’s one lesson I’m repeatedly learning, it’s that we have to ask for what we want in life. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t. But you have to ask. Whatever it is you want, career or relationship-wise, subject yourself to exposure therapy for rejection, microdoses of being told “no” over and over. It’ll make the occasional “yes” all the more satisfying.

Set Up a Donation Box

Chances are, there are plenty of items in your house that you no longer need. By keeping a donation box in a convenient spot, you’ll be encouraged to consistently add to it. Not only will you feel more organized, but those items will find a better home too.

“If you come across a kitchen gadget you haven’t used in months or years, drop it into your designated donation box,” Ellison says. “Toys your kids are no longer into? Drop them in the donation box. Have the box somewhere near your doorway, and when it’s full, put it in the car and drop it off at a donation spot.”

Accomplishments

Youth and beauty are not accomplishments. They are the temporary, happy by products of time and/or DNA. Don’t hold your breath for either. – Carrie Fisher
