Winter

There is a privacy out there which no other season gives you…. In spring, summer, and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.   -Ruth Stout

Sharing a Roof, and Money, With Adult Kids

Once you’ve decided to welcome an adult child home, then it’s time to set ground rules, says Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of “Your Turn: How to Be an Adult.” Start with a candid conversation about what each party expects. “Get clear on, ‘You’re older now, things have changed. … We are happy to support you, but let’s talk about what we expect in terms of day-to-day norms and behaviors,’” she says.

In many cases, she says, it makes sense to treat young adults like Airbnb guests: They will use the kitchen and a bedroom but do their own laundry and some household chores and pay some rent. Barring mental health challenges or another crisis, a young adult should be expected to pitch in financially, too. “If they can’t pay rent, then maybe they can pay for groceries or the phone bill,” she says.

How Did I Get Here ?

To this day I can’t make sense of how, but it always worked out. It sounded crazy, but I thrived in the stress of those early days…Belief in something that seems downright impossible, that’s when I thrive most. Try this …. think back to a time when you were really living. I mean living in your element, without a second -guessing yourself. Now take note of all the circumstances surrounding you. Who was in your life, what you had to gain, what you had to lose, and what kept you running anyway…. Write it down and sit with those details for a minute. I’ll go out on a limb and guess that your life wasn’t picture perfect. Because those two things aren’t synonymous. We can have one without the other, but more often than not, flourishing happens in that stretch in between…

Managing Holiday Relationship Expectations

Do you know what you and your partner are doing for the holidays? Are you exchanging gifts? Does your partner even care about celebrating? If you’ve been putting off talking about all of this because you know holidays can be a loaded topic, you should just bite the bullet and get the talk over with. Why? Because if you don’t discuss your expectations in your relationship — especially around the holidays — it can cause issues later on.
