Refugees vs. Evacuees?

Why does it piss you off so much when someone refers to the folks who were displaced as refugees vs. evacuees? It makes me mad because by definition, we are not refugees. We were being treated like refugees, but we are American, right? We are from here, right? We fight, and we would die for this place, right? I thought that calling us refugees was lazy. And don’t be lazy with how you are labeling us because words are things, right? So I just think that it’s the lack of empathy, and it’s the lack of respect for Black people and Black bodies. It’s like one of those things where I’m not mad. I’m just disappointed. – Edward Buckley Jr

Balance

Dear God, help me to practice balancing in a world filled with ceaseless motion. Give me the strength to not put on blinders to all that is wrong in the world. Instead, let me make a meaningful difference as I move forward from my peace. Amen.

Art is a Lifeline

Art is a lifeline for my daughter, Taegan. When we learned she had autism after returning to in-person school, I told her that she was on the spectrum. I told her that, like indigo, she is a beautiful and unique color that many people mistake for purple, but upon closer observation realize is the rarest blue. Recently, Taegan drew a girl in a scuba suit breathing with an oxygen tank. “She’s in acid,” she said. “But the acid’s good. It grows her wings.” Sometimes when everything around us feels like acid, I try to remember that our wings are growing. — Summer Koester

Get Politics Out of Your Doctors’ Offices’

I love the op-ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

Newsprint | Sappi Global

I am a retired family physician. I spent my career caring for pregnant women and their children. Pregnancy is not a happy-go-lucky condition that always ends with a healthy baby and an unscathed mother. There are dozens of things that can and do go wrong. Yet legislators and judges claim to know better than doctors how to manage pregnancies. People knowing nothing about biology are passing laws prohibiting lifesaving procedures.

Twenty percent of pregnancies spontaneously miscarry. Sometimes this causes complications which can become life threatening. An embryo lodged in the fallopian tube can be catastrophic if left untreated. Yet laws have been passed prohibiting doctors from performing procedures to treat these conditions.

I feel great sorrow for my former colleagues who now have to balance providing exemplary care with the fear of litigation or incarceration. Lawyers and judges should not be practicing medicine. Women and doctors should not be subject to the whims of politicians. If this is the world you wanted, then congratulations, you got what you voted for. But if you care about the lives and health of your mothers, sisters and daughters, then please vote differently to get politics out of your doctors’ offices.

I Need a Blender

What do most people use a blender for? I have a 14-cup Magimix food processor, but I know a blender would be nice for making smoothies, purees and what else? I’m always trying out new recipes. So, convince me I need a blender.

Blenders are great, in my opinion. Smoothies, for sure. And frozen drinks, of course! You can also make something like horchata, which is fun, and in the summer, I am always using it to make gazpacho. Dressings, too. Even pureeing warm soups.
