About Her Cancer Diagnosis?

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The problem: She hasn’t told me. (I overheard her husband talking about it: Her illness was discovered during routine medical tests. She was having a hard time getting pregnant — which she also didn’t tell me.) I thought we were close, but I guess we’re not. Her decision to exclude me from these issues in her life hurts me and puts me in an awkward situation. What can I say if I’m not supposed to know about these big challenges she’s facing? I’m not sure how to handle this. Advice, please? K.H.

Reading this I understand both sides, perhaps the friend is trying to process this news, and she doesn’t want to be treated differently.  Most individuals with a diagnosis want to be treated normally as possible, and that is their right, because no matter how hard you try once the news is out, things will change.  I do understand the friend also feeling hurt, and believing if they have a true friendship, her friend should be openly sharing.  However, like Philip, said, this is not about her feelings, and she should be there for her friend, and support her until she is ready.  What are your thoughts?

Legalizing Marijuana

“Legalizing marijuana would be at the top of my list. This is not just about wanting to get high and not get arrested. We know that Black and Hispanic people are targeted more for drug arrests. I would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and stop treating it the same as other drugs that are considerably worse for you. That will ultimately start clearing a lot of Black and brown people out of the legal system.” -Steve Bloom

“The big problem we have right now is a huge division between people—not just between Black and white but between economic classes, and in visions for this country. I’d want to bring us together. I’ve been a supervisor, and to be an effective leader you have to put the interests of the people you’re responsible for ahead of your own interests. No matter how the election goes, there’s a whole section of this country that’s going to feel really left out and angry. As president, I’d want to make people see we have more in common than we do not. I know from my own experience you get a lot of pushback. You have to be honest with your people. If you lie, then they know you don’t trust them and you don’t think they’re capable of handling the truth.”

Pharmaceutical Sciences

When Maha Haq’s mother caught her smoking marijuana as a teenager, it changed her life forever. “My mom is a clinical researcher, an academic, so she told me I had to present a defense of why I was smoking,” Haq says. As she researched her report, she found her passion. “I think my mom saw a spark of a devotion to science in me.” Haq has since completed her undergrad studies at UCLA and is currently working toward her master’s in pharmaceutical sciences with a concentration on medical cannabis sciences at the University of Maryland. She is also leading Cannaclub, a student group she started at UCLA that now has chapters across 11 campuses nationwide. The organization is focused on education, advocacy, and opportunity. “My goal is to nurture the next gen of leaders in the space,” she says. She is now in the process of creating a governing body for all Cannaclub chapters that will help campuses communicate and share resources. “We can create change and mold this into a better industry.”  –Maha Haq

Prayer

Dear God, please help me bestow tenderness on those around me. May I remember that tenderness isn’t weak but courageous. Bestowing it on others is one of the strongest and bravest things I can do. Amen.

Appreciation

At the start of school year, we get each staff members emergency contact info. During the year. I take a photo of the person teaching and mail it to their families, along with a letter telling them how hard their daughter of wife or loved one works and how much we appreciate them, and anytime a teacher appears with their kid in a video meeting I make sure to tell the kid what a wonderful teacher their parent is and how hard they work. -Melinda S.
