Chapters

Bad chapters can still create great stories. Wrong paths can still lead to right places. Failed dreams can still create successful people. Sometimes it takes losing yourself to find yourself. Cynthia Thurlow

Education

Something I think traditional education is not doing very well is that they basically teach kids that you need to learn in order to build a career and apply it when you become an adult. There’s this very transactional approach to learning. But I think a lot more people are starting to embrace lifelong learning — a way of learning that is more playful, that is driven by curiosity rather than a strict goal of improving your career, and that is more exploratory. You can start reading about a topic without really knowing what you’re going to discover or how you’re going to use it. But you’re learning for the sake of learning, which is beautiful and it’s amazing.

Identify Trigger Items… and Skip Them for Now

Lots of emotions are tied up in our things—love, pride, grief, anger, etc. If, while you’re decluttering, you come across something that makes you extra emotional, put it in a box, label it, and move on to something else. You don’t have to deal with it right now. Come back to it in an hour, a month, or when you feel ready.

Time

Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.”

– Lao Tzu

Yes, it’s true, we all have things to do and places to be, obligations to take care of and deadlines to adhere to.  And, with all the hours of the day, how do we spend our time?  A quick tally might reveal how much is frittered away on seemingly superfluous activities that steal our time.  How do we recalibrate our relationship to time? We begin by unraveling the illusion of speediness and slow down. Think about when we are falling in love, with another or some thing we love doing, how often time is forgotten, flowing fluidly with never-ending ease.  We make choices that benefit our best behalf, not merely beholden to the constraints of time.
