Types of stress

Environmental stressors: Your environment bombards you with demands too quickly to enable you to adjust to such things as snow storms, traffic, noise, and pollution.

Social stressors: Deadlines, financial problems, job interviews, loss of loved ones, and disagreements all tax your coping skills.

Biological stressors: Changes in our physiology, due to any number of factors—including aging, change in eating habits, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, moving or not moving our bodies, or the onset of adolescence or menopause—require us to adjust to maintain our health.

Mental stressors: Ayurvedic philosophy considers the mind as the place where all disease originates. Whether we practice ayurveda or not, most of us probably recognize that our own thoughts are sometimes our largest source of stress. As our brain takes in information, our past experiences and current stressors from the above categories may cause that new information to turn on our “emergency system” oradrenals, generating a bath of chemicals that create both physiological stress and emotional stress.

Golden Age of TV

Your turn: Make a list of three to five shows (or documentaries and films) that you’ve been meaning to watch. Then try out the first 10 minutes next time you’re watching TV. By committing an hour at most to each show, it immediately lowered the stakes. It felt more like window shopping. To my surprise, we eventually settled on “The Crown.” We probably saved about an hour of browsing time in the past week alone.

Secrets to Faking a Clean House

Turn up the lights – Studies have shown that people perceive well-lit spaces as cleaner than dimly lit ones. One 2013 experiment found that people even believed litter looked cleaner in bright light. “It goes back to ancient times, when sunlight was associated with health,” says Vincent P. Magnini, a professor of marketing and hospitality management at Longwood University who has researched the perception of cleanliness. “Natural light is best — open up your blinds!” Still, he cautions that bright lighting can backfire if you haven’t recently dusted, so be mindful of obviously dusty spots, such as the TV.

Do a surface wipe – While picking up or putting away your stuff goes a long way, it can’t hide the dust bunnies frolicking on your floor or the mysterious goop on your kitchen counter. “People really notice if you wipe down the most visible surfaces — floors, kitchen countertops, get the soap scum off the powder room sink,” says Grace Reynolds, co-founder of the American House Cleaners Association. “Plus, give attention to anything that has a sheen or that can show smudges — mirrors, the glass on your front door.”

Advice For What To Do When You…

Fail… Failures feel like failures in the moment, but with hindsight, you’ll see them as the steps to have gotten you where you are. Feel stressed out… Pause, take a deep breath, and consider what is within your control and what can be changed in the immediate. Want a confidence boost… Pretend your inner dialogue is always directed at your child self. I guarantee you’ll be kinder, gentler, and a bigger cheerleader for yourself. Have to give difficult feedback… Recognize that if the intention is considered and the outcome is necessary, then it is required. Just be thoughtful with your words. Get your paycheck… Put 10–20% away in savings and investments.

Friendships in Adulthood

Friendships require two people occasionally showing up in the same spaces — whether a room with windows and walls, or the heart space created by a phone call or text. I have a friend who has pushed me out of every space. She suggested we meet for coffee “someday.” I suggested we meet Wednesday. Not possible, she said. How about another day? No response from her all summer. My friend wants options but never intends to vest them. I know something she doesn’t; we’re bankrupt. We’ll never meet for coffee, or anything, because Someday and Wednesday cannot be friends. — Missy Snapp
