Reflections on Learning

“In university they don’t tell you that the greater part of the law is learning to tolerate fools.” – Doris Lessing

The greatest sign of success for a teacher… is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’ – Maria Montessori

Blessed is the man, who having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact. – George Eliot

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose. It is a seeking that he who wishes may know the cosmic secrets of the world and they that dwell therein.” – Zora Neale Hurston

“I learned three important things in college-to use a library, to memorize quickly and visually, to drop asleep at any time given a horizontal surface and fifteen minutes. What I could not learn was to think creatively on schedule.”— Agnes De Mille

Organizing your books

What’s the best way to organize your collection into a usable, eye-catching library ?“This really depends on the person. There is no ‘right’ way to organize books,”- Book Lover

By color. Color is what drew me into my college friend’s library. She placed all of her hardback books together, stripped them of their covers and arranged them by color. It looks clean and elegant and feels timeless. Some take this to the next level and create intentional rainbows on their shelves, from top to bottom.

By topic. Many people organize their fiction by author, but nonfiction by subject matter or category. Then they arrange those by height to make them look good on the shelf. A travel section serves as a happy reminder of where you’ve been and where you want to go.

By author. Alphabetically is a familiar system, as it’s how we would find them in sections of a library or bookstore. Favorite authors get their own shelves, and sometimes full bookcases!

By favorites. Powell’s Books features employees’ favorite books throughout the store. I place my favorites front and center, too. Occasionally, guests have noticed them, which has sparked engaging conversations.

Outside-the-box ideas. Barnes & Noble’s in-store banned book display makes a statement, and the sometimes-surprising titles provide a certain conversation piece. The Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn, New York, organizes its books alphabetically by the author’s first name, reflecting the archives’ founding during the feminist movement of the 1970s.

Ways to Boost Your Home Value: Change cabinet Hardware

Even if you can’t afford a full renovation, one simple upgrade that agents say often goes a long way in kitchens and bathrooms is replacing old cabinet hardware with more stylish knobs and drawer pulls. If you can spend a bit more time and money, swap out dingy faucets and shower heads, and outdated towel bars and hooks, too. This will “signal to a buyer that, oh, it’s modern, it’s updated, it’s on trend,” says Amanda Pendleton, a home trends expert for Zillow. It’s that feeling, she says, that can lead to a higher home value.

Deep Roots

The choices is not made in theory, for to grow deep roots requires action, courage, love, commitment. The daily alarm that goes off too early but reminds us of greater goals than sleep. Showing up and showing compassion, especially when it’s inconvenient. Tethering ourselves only to whom and what we truly stand for. Roots growing through bold conformation when dreams for something lasting becomes a reality…Radical change is not made overnight but in thousands of choices pointed in the same direction. These choices push us further and further until one day we find we are strong. We are immovable. And when we look at the horizon and see the next storm moving in, we need to find shelter. Nothing can displace us with strength of these roots.
