Performance Review

The article “Gave poor-performing employees the benefit of the doubt — and a plan” by journalist Phil Blair. The following paragraph stood out to me “Then, we review a specific list of what has to change, why, and by when.  Most importantly, we ask this question: Are you willing to put in the work needed to meet our expectations? If the answer is an enthusiastic ‘yes,’ then we move forward. If their answer is ‘no,’ then we offer to shake hands and part amicably. We tell the employee that for the good of their long-term career, please quit us, don’t make us fire you. The burden of being fired from a job for underperformance follows you for a long time.”

This left me with a few questions. If one says “no,” how much time do they have to find new employment? Are they still able to obtain a letter of reference from this employer? Under what circumstances will one say no? The ones that came to my mind were a physically or emotionally abusive work environment. Has anyone ever been in such a situation? How did you handle it?

Listening Party

My roommate and I got a new record player and had our first themed listening party (pick an album, make people dress up, pick a themed cocktail). So nice to have people in our home! — Isabella Gomez Sarmient

Word of The Day

Proactive Interference is defined as the “tendency of previously learned material to hinder subsequent learning.” Chances are, we’re all able to relate to classic example of this hinderance:” Things like your old address popping into your mind when you have to write your new address for a few months after you move. Or uh oh! calling your current partner by the name of your ex.

Word of the Day

The term flexible work environment can mean different things to different people. For some, it means being able to work from home a few days every week. For others, it means being able to adjust their work hours. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, but one thing is clear: All employees value flexibility, but for women, it can mean the difference between staying and leaving an employer.

Gatekeeping

There’s a lot of gatekeeping in the tech industry, but the industry needs people from all backgrounds. So don’t let that gatekeeping make you feel like this is a thing you cannot do. It’s important to find your support systems, find your advocates.” – TIMNIT GEBRU
