Vacation

The pace a little slower. Hearts a little lighter. The Moment a little sweeter.

School safety

I love the op-ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

Our students deserve and need to feel safe at school so they can learn. As committees discuss ways to make this a reality, I’ve got a request: Listen to the students, ask them about ways that they feel safe! Include them in planning groups.

I’m a retired certificated school nurse, 27 years in this position. Loved it, did my best, and I miss hanging around students and learning from them.

While committees talk about how much it costs for added safety, how about some simple, inexpensive ways to start?

Interior classroom door locks must be installed and window covers added. Turning off lights, locking doors, students sitting on the floor, quietly, may save lives.

Activism

Strike against war, for without you no battles can be fought! Strike against manufacturing shrapnel and gas bombs and all other tools of murder! Strike against preparedness that means death and misery to millions of human beings! Be not dumb, obedient sales in an army of destruction! Be heroes in an army of construction! – Helen Keller

The belief that we are defending the highest good of the mothers of our race and the ultimate welfare of society makes every sacrifice seem trivial, every duty a pleasure. The pressings need spurs us on, the certainty of victory give us daily inspiration. — Carrie Chapman Catt

Beautiful Stillness

Walking recently at sunset on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Manhattan incandescent against an orange sky, I watched a line of tourists taking the same photo. I challenged myself to observe without documenting, to have an experience and let my memory be the only evidence that I was there. I argued with myself: “The memory will fade, I should capture the scene!” I bargained: “I’ll capture the tourists and the sunset, a comment on how everyone else is taking pictures while I’m standing apart from them!” I tried to stand still and just notice. – Melissa Kirsch

Never Marry an Unsolved Problem

That’s Rule No. 1 for preventing relationship misery. Don’t proceed even one more step toward marriage until you’ve addressed your doubts.

Rule No. 2: Don’t rely solely on your own explanations for other people’s behavior when they are available to explain it themselves. Not as an interrogation, just a conversation. It’s not about control or change, it’s just about your getting to know each other (much) better. And understanding your relationship.

Rule No. 3: Don’t assign negative values to things that are merely different. This applies even to ourselves. Have you thought about why you’ve applied the worst interpretations to your own nature?

Rule No. 4: Hold out for true intimacy — which means saying the things that scare you, not hiding out in your like-minded friends and your hobbies. If you don’t feel safe enough to be vulnerable, then either you’re not ready for an intimate relationship or you’re not with the right partner. Or both. All of which are fine, as long as you’re honest with yourself about that and adjust your relationships accordingly.
