Relaxation

Relaxation is on your mind. A good book with some wine and a bubble bath can help you decompress. Sometimes you obsess too much and become your own worst enemy. Practice getting out of your head.

Recommit to Yourself

Instead of making a list of resolutions that are external, try to make a list of things that only involve showing up as your most authentic self! What are the things that renew your spirit, bring you personal fulfillment, and give you hope or joy? How are you going to commit to being the best version of you without being in your full authenticity! You can try using our Black Girl Doctor Affirmation Journal to create the perfect space for these reflections.

Soul Food

Soul Food 105 Inspirational Stories for African Americans by Eric V. Copage is a literary collage of stories, poetry, and fables in a chicken-soupish volume that provides a wonderful, delightful, powerful hearty buffet of inspiration in bite-size morsels. “Most are no more than one thousand words because I wanted these stories to be a nutritionist meal, but not a nine-course banquet that would take days to finish” (xiii) “This collection is broken down into seven elements: Love, Self-Esteem, Family, Creativity, Tenacity, Wisdom, and Faith. These stories are heartwarming and include stories from Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Nikki Giovanni, Barry White, Queen Latifah, Henry Louis Gossett Jr, and Oprah Winfrey to name just a few.” Every story felt like I was on a beautiful walk with my ancestors, taking in their story as only they could tell it. “He told his story casually, not with great fanfare – he gave me with his stories a watering hole for my psyche, a spiritual oasis where I could gather strength for my own forays into the world. (xii) Here is a sample of stories. In An Unmarked Man, “Michel Marriott shares how he discovered ‘an essential element of being a man’” while pledging a fraternity known to physically brand its members during initiation”. In Royalty, Part II, Queen Latifah expounds on what it means to her to be a self-proclaimed queen and tells other women how they too can have what it takes. Most importantly, she says, “You have to want to be a queen”. The Choice tells the story of a runaway slave outwitting his master after he is caught and beaten “This book may be read cover to cover like a formal meal, or you can leaf through the book and snack on what you’re in the mood for at the moment” (xv). This would be a great book just to keep around and open to any story to deliberate upon.

The Hustle

What financial advice do you have for entrepreneurs who want to turn your side hustle into a full-time hustle? Don’t commingle all your funds. Have a separate bank account for your side hustle. It will give you more visibility into how you’re doing. Write out your budget for the next three months, 3 to 6 months. Make sure you have enough savings to build an “if this, then that” plan. Like “if I’m not able to replace my salary with my side hustle within the next three months, then what am I going to do? Because then once you have the plan, if it happens, you’re not emotionally paralyzed, and you can act.

Let’s run through a few side hustle scenarios. If I sell merch on Etsy, and I’m not sure if I can become something bigger, what do I do? If you also have a day job, then the first question is this going to replace your income or just creating supplemental income? If you’re making a profit and if it’s not taking up all your time, and if you feel like you can continue to grow at a slow pace then do that. If it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it. I think a lot of the times people will try to solve a problem then maybe isn’t there?

Here’s another scenario I have an idea for a side hustle. How do I know if it has legs? Are you making money? If you’re not making money, it’s a hobby. The next question is how much did you spend on the side hustle? If you’re making 10,000 a month but you’re spending 10,000 a month you’re treading water. I need you to be moving forward with your side hustle.

Do you suggest testing your side hustle? Testing is smart. You can run a Facebook advertising; you can create a landing page before the products ship. Make a waitlist. There are types of ways to evaluate without putting too much of your money on the line.

Family

Family time has never felt more important than it does this year. Whether your relatives are out of town or nearby, you’ve prioritized them. Sensitivity is not your strong point, but you are starting to express your true emotions more.
