Style

And when it comes to fashion? With fashion, I think I sometimes fall into the minimalism categories, still—but I love falling into maximalism, too. For me, that means playing with more colors. It’s really easy to get stuck in a neutral and black cycle. It happens to everyone at some point. You’ve got to remind yourself to have fun. I also think there’s more freedom in being a Black woman in fashion. We get to play with so many colors that pop nicely on our skin tones. And it looks quite natural for us to do that. – Elba

Invest in Your Growth

Keeping a healthy balance and state of physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental wellbeing takes an investment of time and also potentially outside support. We can hold ourselves accountable for our commitment, but we don’t have to go at it alone. There is no shame in hiring a therapist, coach, trainer, or taking a course or reading books to help along the journey if we know there are areas where we need additional guidance, knowledge, or support. Personal leadership is a lifelong journey and while there is a starting point, there is not an endpoint. Part of the beauty of this adventure called life is growth. The only constant is change. So we have the opportunity for continued growth and development as individuals over the course of our life if we are willing. If you think of some of the most innovative companies of our time, you can also look to their commitment to growth and expansion of possibility throughout your own journey.

Complexity

Albert Einstein said, “You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”  We need to step out of our parts so that we aren’t limited by their immature perspectives. When we relate to a triggered part from a place of compassion, we become dis-identified with the part. If I feel compassion toward the part of me that feels hurt, for instance, I become bigger than this young part. Not only am I hurt, I am also the compassion that feels moved by my pain and wants to help. I can disentangle from my hurt part and see the larger picture of what’s happening with more complexity.

Picture Hanging

You’re supposed to find a stud to hang something. Many locations we choose on walls, however, don’t line up with one. In these instances, you’ll need a drywall anchor. (Not the flimsy ones that come with a frame. Get ones that hold weight.) Drill a small hole in the drywall, and install the anchor. Make it a snug fit. Then, screw the screw in. Once tightened, turn it an extra five to 10 times.

“It scrunches the anchor behind the drywall and pulls it tight against the backside,” says Mickey Allison, owner of Mickey “The Maintenance Man.”

Allison also recommends using two anchors for better weight distribution. To align them evenly, he measures from the floor up because floors are more level than ceilings and walls.

For pictures with hanging wire, Ben Milano, owner of Flaming Toaster Construction & Handyman Services, always places a metal washer under the screw. “The wire slides behind something larger than the screwhead, making it more secure,” he says.
