Can I grow tomatoes in a 5-gallon container?

Q: I purchased a Super Sweet 100 cherry tomato plant. Can I grow this in a 5-gallon bucket with stakes/support? Online information says they grow to 5 feet. I have never successfully grown my own tomatoes.

A: You can successfully grow this type of tomato in a 5-gallon bucket. When planting, you want to pick off all of the side branches up to just the top few inches. Then plant it deep in the bucket, so that your start is only a few inches high with a few leaves exposed. All of those little hairlike structures on the main branch will develop into roots and provide a good system to absorb water and keep the plant stable over the summer.

With this size container, you will have to provide daily water when it gets a bit warmer and watch out for things like blossom end rot, which happen more frequently on potted tomatoes.

I grow most of my tomatoes in pots every year since I plant a lot of early-season crops that take up all of my garden space before the tomatoes are ready to be planted.

Real Life Rants

RANT to the family who chose a line at Dick’s, sent a kid to the other line and then moved the whole family over at the last minute. Pick a line and stick with it! You are training your kids to cut in line.

RANT to the big grocery stores that crow “3 for $10!” but you have to buy all three to get the savings! Fine if you have a big family, but ridiculous if you live alone and can’t possibly use three roast chickens, five loaves of bread, etc. It’s a growing practice and very disappointing.

RANT to, “Your call is important to us, please stay on the line.” Companies do not need to tell us this every 30 seconds. That’s why you added music. If there is music, we are aware that we are still on hold and don’t need to be reminded AGAIN that we are still on hold.

RANT to yard sale signs without the simple, easy and needed date information! How the heck is anyone supposed to know which “Saturday and Sunday” it takes place? Double rant for the excruciatingly unhelpful “today and tomorrow” signs!

RANT to the latest TikTok challenge, which encourages kids to steal things from schools like soap dispensers from the school restrooms. School custodians are overworked sanitizing schools every day to keep students safe and healthy. Stealing the soap dispensers hurts everyone, from the kids trying to wash their hands, to the custodians who have to replace the dispensers, to the administrators who have to track down the perpetrators. Come on, everyone, keeping Seattle healthy is a team effort. Do your part and stop making things harder for everyone!

RANT to Seattle ninjas, who have a tendency to reach around you without saying, “Excuse me.” These ninjas have already knocked off a few of my eyelashes. Picture me at Trader Joe’s shopping for packaged salad greens (for my health). Now visualize someone reaching around me with their hand inches from and directly in front of my face — all while COMPLETELY SILENT. Like some gosh darn ghost going through the motions from when it was alive. This is madness. And when I call these weasels out on it, the most popular response tends to be, “It’s fine.” So, this is why I now swat these random ninja hands away when the opportunity arises. Tell your friends.

RANT to Sound Transit bus 542 and King County Metro bus 255 for eliminating the stop across from UW Medical Center-Montlake. The closest stop is a strain or beyond the physical capability of patients and older adults needing access to the medical center.
