HOW TO RETHINK YOUR APPROACH TO LEARNING WITH YOUR CHILDREN “The number one tip that I would give is, if being involved in your child’s academics, if trying to play the role of the tutor is creating stress and discord in that relationship, step back from that and bring in a professional to help. Because you then can step fully into the role of providing that encouragement and that emotional connection that your child really can only get from you as the parent. I have seen over and over again, when we make that adjustment that the academics improve. And that emotional connection with the parent improves everything else going on in the child’s life. Stop looking for the teachable moments and look for the teachable moments When when my child is experiencing a perfectionist moment and is frustrated and is crying, I go in and I give a hug. And that’s a change for me from before the pandemic; before the pandemic, I would have gone in and tried to fix the learning issue. But now I go on and give the hug.” – Caitlin Meister

Exhausted parents are desperate for it, overextended teenagers crave it, and overworked teachers deserve it. All of our brains need it. So, give the gift of your time by giving someone else a break! You might offer to babysit or let someone sleep in or stay up late. Maybe you volunteer to make someone’s load lighter or take something off their plate so they have time to pursue a passion. Time with no strings attached—unstructured time—feels like the greatest gift of all. And while you’re at it, give the gift of me-time to yourself!

We need to see mental health through a prevention lens and stop seeing physical health as different than mental health
