Community

Community care is so important to our overall health. I feel affirmed. I feel at home. I feel like the weight of this world are not on my shoulders when in community.

An Inestimable Price

Sometimes I scroll through our old home’s Zillow listing to remember the life I had before my husband died. The perfectly staged photos are on display for anyone to see. They look empty — stripped of our belongings, of personality. Still, I picture us in these curated shots: loving, living, fighting, making up, making out, raising our babies. The kitchen table where we communed at the day’s end. The bed where our children and I slept for months after he died. The listing’s estimated price does not take into account how rich that house was with love. — Jessica Strange

Hoping for New Blooms

This can’t possibly work. Hemza is half my age and lives 3,800 miles away. But after he visited me in November, he updated his online status to say, “I fell in love with his soul before I could even touch his skin.” With the distance and age difference, this can’t be heading anywhere, can it? Still, I’m hearing “love,” “skin” and “soul” in a sentence that I’m pretty sure refers to me. When Hemza visited, he planted 100 tulip bulbs in my yard so I will think of him in the spring. So maybe this is heading somewhere, isn’t it? — Matthew Lukasiak

Learning to Let Love In

My husband Jim likes people more than I do. He even lets them in the house. I’m more tentative about such things. It’s a hard habit to break. Growing up in Mississippi, I was in charge of keeping visitors waiting outside until we knew that mom wasn’t passed out on the kitchen linoleum. People talk. You can’t have people barging in, unannounced, until you get the chance to pretend that all is well. Jim loves me enough not to show up with surprise guests. I love Jim enough to welcome his friends into our home, and him into my heart. — Jonathan Odell
