“Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren

I love the op-ed section of the paper. I believe we all need to write at least one letter on something we’re passionate about in our lifetime. In saying that, I applaud this reader

Re: “Grandmothers raising grandchildren should be lifted up, supported” [Jan. 15, Opinion]:

Carlton Winfrey’s column on grandmothers raising their grandchildren was very inspiring. The nonprofit group Women United Seattle, which helps them do that job, deserves praise and support. However, there are also a lot of grandfathers stepping up when the parents are unable to fulfill their parental role. I have a friend who raised four grandsons by himself when his daughter could not be a good mother and the father was not in the picture.

A Seattle nonprofit called DADS (Divine Alternatives for Dads Services) helps both fathers and grandfathers play a stronger role in children’s lives and offers a fatherhood training program for those men who want to be responsible fathers or grandfathers. They can make a huge difference, especially with boys who need solid male role models but don’t have them in their homes.

Kroger merger: ‘Consumers Are Taking a Beating’

Re: “Kroger seeks to create grocery giant in $20B Albertsons bid” [Oct. 14, Business]:

Kroger is working to buy Albertson’s stores. Only five years ago, Albertson’s purchased Safeway along with store brands in other states in a huge merger.

It concerns me greatly if this is to go through, because we need choice and competition as consumers, and I think this will directly affect both. It’s claimed that this will improve efficiencies and expand customer reach.

It may be more efficient for them, and I’m sure quite profitable at the rate all the chains have been raising prices, but I believe it could hurt employees and consumers who benefit from a competitive and diversified marketplace. I wonder how many stores will be closed once this happens? What happens to prices once this happens? I think many people are having to cut back purchases right now.

I think it’s worth peoples’ time and effort to let elected officials and the White House know how they feel on this issue. It is slated to go through in early 2024. We consumers are taking a beating right now at the hands of an increasingly consolidated marketplace, and it’s time to speak our piece.

Spotting God

We all face many twists and turns in life. When we focus on our problems, however, the things we encounter seem unmanageable, leaving us dizzy and heading toward a disastrous fall. The Bible reminds us that if we keep our minds steadfast, or focused, on God, He’ll keep us in “perfect peace” (Isaiah 26:3). Perfect peace means that no matter how many turns life takes, we can remain calm, assured that God will be with us through our problems and trials. He’s the “Rock eternal” (v. 4)—the ultimate “spot” to fix our eyes on—because His promises never change. May we keep our eyes on Him as we go through each day, going to Him in prayer and studying His promises in the Scriptures. May we rely on God, our eternal Rock, to help us move gracefully through all of life.

REFLECT & PRAY What problems have you been focused on lately? What has God revealed in Scripture about the trials you face? Dear heavenly Father, forgive me for focusing on the problems I face each day. I know You’ve conquered the world and remain bigger than my trials. Help me turn my eyes and heart to You in every circumstance.

Presence

It’s opened my eyes to all the different ways there are to have a presence and to make it meaningful When we show up for someone. When we listen. When we do what we say we will. When we say the unpopular thing. Some moments, I believe, call for boldness and extravagance. There’s a time to sweep people off their feet. And there’s also a time to bring the ground back beneath them. Where trust is exchanged. Understanding too. Where human connection means more than whatever I planned on performing.

I want my presence to mean something. To make a real impact. In the past, I’ve thought that meant giving people prestige, delivering on whatever pledge I’ve made, spoken or unspoken. I thought it meant being loud …and maybe sometimes it does. But now I know it’s also in the quieter moments. Sometimes it’s the things we don’t say at all. There may not be applause or laughter or standing ovation on the other side but I am learning that it’s in the moments when I place the people in front of me above performing  that my impact resounds.
