Restorative Practices

Three restorative practices to help you enjoy moments of peace every day: Stillness: Stillness is a key ingredient in a peaceful life. Nature provides an ideal backdrop for cultivating stillness, whether you’re lying in the grass, floating in water, or sitting on a park bench. Silence: Taking just five minutes to sit in silence can elicit a profound sense of peace. Start to notice where there’s extra noise in or around your life, and see if you can invite more intentional quiet: for example, turning your phone off during certain times, or taking a walk without headphones. Rhythm: Gentle, deliberate rhythms open pathways to peace. Moving in sync with natural rhythms, whether walking, dancing, chopping veggies, or simply tuning in to the sounds of nature, invites peace to emerge from within. Give it a try. Practice sinking into the soft sense of peace in stillness, silence, and rhythms of your everyday life.

Self-Awareness

Take a moment right now to do a short self-assessment.

  • What emotion are you feeling right now?  Does it feel more like anger or annoyance?  Fear, worry, or apprehension?  Sadness or despair?  Happiness, appreciation, or love?
  • What thoughts and perceptions are causing or triggering this feeling?
  • How well are you aligned with your core values and guiding principles?
  • Do you even know what your core values are? And if so, do you sometimes find yourself feeling like a fish out of water – misaligned with what you value most?

Contemplate what your most common tendencies are when dealing with challenging situations  These are all questions designed to help you become more aware of what drives you, what frustrates you, and what influence you have on others:

  • Do you work well under pressure, or do you become anxious?
  • Do you welcome honest feedback, or does it make you feel uncomfortable?
  • Are you mindful of your strengths and limitations and are you using this awareness to make better choices?
  • How do other people feel about you?
  • How do you know this?

Upgrade Your Everyday Items

Try and make the everyday items you use as beautiful as possible. For example, choose a wood cutting board over a plastic one, a copper pot versus a non-stick one, a beautifully colored tea kettle in lieu of standard silver. These things all add charm to your kitchen countertops so the clutter will be less noticeable.

Pound of Wine

I eat pretty healthy, but love wine. I’d probably be 5 to 10 pounds lighter if I didn’t drink wine! –

Thank You

I read something many years ago to make a thank you list for your parents of every memory that you can recall that you want to thank them for. I made one for my dad and one for my mom. I started with my earliest memories and typed it. I worked on it over several weeks as things came to mind. By the time I was finished it was two single spaced pages of bulleted items.

I gave it to each of them as a Christmas present. My dad was not sentimental, but when he died, I found my thank you list in his box of cherished items. It really touched him. My mom is still living and I know she loved hers as well. It brought back precious memories for both of them.
