According to Therapists: Not Being Direct With Your Therapist

Your therapist is there for you. If something doesn’t make sense or feels off, be upfront and tell them.

“You won’t hurt our feelings,” “You can say, ‘This isn’t working for me,’ ‘I need you to be more challenging,’ or, ‘I’d like you to reduce the amount of advice you’re giving me and listen more.’ A good therapist will be honest with you about their style so that you can come to a nice working relationship.”

And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Though you may feel nervous or uncomfortable, remember that all questions or requests for clarification are totally valid.

How Do We Stop The Inflation Madness?

Bring your budget up to speed. Still relying on last year’s spending plan, from when everything was considerably cheaper? It’s probably time to switch it up. Make room for the necessities — including their higher prices — and your money goals. Then consider where you can cut costs or negotiate some down.

Negotiate. As costs for things like rent and medical care keep ticking up, remember you have the power to negotiate. It’s not guaranteed to bring the prices down, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Get rewarded. Your credit card can help you get money back on spending you have to do anyway. Make purchases on a card that offers a statement credit, travel points, or other rewards every time you swipe. Or if you want to rack up cash back but not a balance, try apps like Honey and Rakuten.

What Soup Says

You’re not my girlfriend. But the moment you tell me you’re not feeling well, I buy onions, celery, carrots, chicken and noodles, and spend the afternoon peeling, dicing and simmering. As if a bowl of soup can convey what I can’t tell you. As if walking 10 blocks to your apartment in November is the same as saying “I love you.” You open the door and laugh and say you love me, unthinkingly. The bowl is warm in my hands. I remind myself that you have a boyfriend. I know you love him. But I love you all the same. — Melanie Zhang
